The Pine Mountain-Cloverdale Peak AVA

Pine Mountain-Cloverdale Peak is truly an: “Island in the Sky”.

Located above the Alexander Valley and Russian River, this new Appellation offers truly distinct aspects for premium wine making.

This Appellation is based on the rich and distinct history of viticulture, the higher elevation vineyards, small and intense vineyard development, red rock soils, southwestern orientations, small size of berries, and the distinct microclimate of Pine Mountain itself.

Pine Mountain’s history dates back to the late 1800s and the Preston Ranch. This ranch made medicinal wines from red grapes that it sold at its general store near what is now the town of Cloverdale. Remnants of the past are discoverable including ancient vineyards and a mountain side winery famous for its winery, circa 1910, dances held in summers where the town folk drove their buggies up the hill to enjoy music and wine, and where all the “ladies” were promised a dance.

The vineyards on Pine Mountain are among the highest, if not the highest, in Northern California sitting above the fog line at 1600 ft up to 2600 ft. High elevation vineyards are now recognized throughout the world and by premium wine makers, as a special environment for harvesting grapes with richer and more intense colors, aromas and flavors. The boundaries of the Appellation also encompass portions of both Sonoma and Mendocino Counties, another unusual feature.

The rugged terrain and steep hillsides require costly and extreme farming techniques, but result in grapes which are acclaimed and sought after by major wineries.

The climatic conditions are also very unique in Sonoma County. There is a much colder winter with snow and cooler spring temperatures such that bud-break and bloom are generally delayed by 2-4 weeks in contrast to the vineyards on the Alexander Valley floor. The diurnal temperature fluctuations during the growing season, with warm days and cooler nighttime temperatures, create flavor profiles in the grapes sought by premium wine makers. Finally, the coastal influence sea breezes we experience on the “mountain” means a welcome respite from the harsh heat of the late afternoon. Above the fog, in the sun, Pine Mountain-Cloverdale Peak is a true: “Island in the Sky”.
